William L. Hughes, 89, of Monessen, died Saturday, August 15, 2009 in Nevaeh Cove Personal Care Home, Charleroi.He was born in Monessen on May 3, 1920, the son of the late Benjamin H. and Edna (Loundes) Hughes. Mr. Hughes was a life long resident of Monessen, and a 1939 graduate of Monessen High School. Bill played sandlot baseball in Monessen during the 1940's and 1950's, and coached youth baseball during the 1950's and 1960's. He was a member of Epiphany of Our Lord R. C. Church and its Holy Name Society, American Legion Post 28 and V.F.W. Post 1190, all of Monessen. He was retired from American Chain and Cable Co. Pages Plant in Monessen, and worked as a postal employee for the Charleroi and Monessen Post OfficesHe was a veteran of WWII, having served as a Technical Sergeant with the U.S. Army Headquarters Co. 3rd Battalion 393 Regiment, 99th Division, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.He is survived by his daughter, Elaine Dee McIntosh of Beaver Falls, his son, William L. Hughes Jr. of Monessen, five grandchildren; William McIntosh and wife Wendy of Harrisburg, Brian McIntosh of Beaver Falls, Bill Hughes III of Charleroi, Kimberly Hughes of Monessen, Jessica Zuraw and husband Denny of West Newton, seven great grandchildren, Ashley, Jennifer, Lauren, Sophia, and Emma McIntosh, D.J. Streets, Abbey Zuraw, and by numerous nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Florence DiDonato Hughes, son-in-law John W. McIntosh, two brothers Delbert and Edward Hughes, and by a sister Hannah Smith Faust..Friends will be received on Monday from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. in the Dalfonso-Billick Funeral Home Inc. and Cremation Services, 441 Reed Avenue Monessen, (724-684-8750).Services will be held on Tuesday August 18, 2009, beginning with a 9:30 am Blessing in the funeral home, followed by a 10:00 am Funeral Mass in Epiphany of Our Lord R. C. Church. Interment will follow in Grandview Cemetery, Monessen.The V.F.W. Post 1190 and the American Legion Post 28, will conduct services on Monday at 7:00 pm in the funeral home.
