Thomas Mayernik, 84, of Baltimore, MD, formerly of Monessen, died Sunday, July 3, 2011 in Franklin Square Hospital Center, Rosedale, MD.He was born in Monessen on April 27, 1927, the son of the late John and Barbara (Stefanik) Mayernik. Tom grew up in Monessen and was destined to be "The Music Man" playing his golden trumpet. After graduating from Monessen High School, he became a member of the U.S. Navy, serving during WW II. During his tour of duty, Tom became a member of the U.S. Navy Band, entertaining service-men at USO shows in Shanghai, China. He received his musical degree at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, MD. He then started the "Tommy May Band", which became a popular venue for nightclubs and local weddings. He furthered his musical education with degrees from the University of Maryland, Morgan State College, and John Hopkins University. Mr. Mayernik taught music for 35 years in the Baltimore City Schools. After retiring, he moved back to Monessen and became involved with many organizations. He was a member of Epiphany of Our Lord R. C. Church, Knights of Columbus #954 being named "Knight of the Year", Bishop Phelan 4th Degree Assembly, American Legion Post 28, Mid Mon Valley Shipmates, Monessen Lions Club having recieved a Pennsylvania Fellow and Melvin Jones Fellow, Leader Dog for the blind, and was a former member of the Monessen Firemen's Clubs, Ukrainian and Croatian Clubs.In 2008, after losing his wife and the love of his life, Elizabeth "Betty" (Maksa) Mayernik, Tom moved back to Baltimore.He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Andrea and Brian D. Bunting of Kingsville, MD, two sisters-in-law, Joan (William) Picchiarini, Jean (Thomas) Patterson, all of Belle Vernon, a brother-in-law, George Maksa of Chicago, IL, and many nieces and nephews.Friends will be received on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm in the Dalfonso-Billick Funeral Home Inc. and Cremation Services, 441 Reed Avenue Monessen, (724-684-8750).Services will be held on Thursday, July 7, 2011, beginning with a 9:30 am Blessing in the funeral home, followed by a 10:00 am Funeral Mass in Epiphany of Our Lord R. C. Church.
