Thomas Eugene Kovalchuk, 61, of Monessen, died unexpectedly on Tuesday April 17, 2018 in U.P.M.C. Presbyterian Hospital. He was born on January 18, 1957 in Pittsburgh, the son Dorothy (Serventi) Kovalchuk who survives of Monessen and the late Thomas Edward Kovalchuk. Tom was a resident of Monessen. He graduated from Kiski Prep, and received his bachelor and masters degree from California University of Pennsylvania. He was a geologist and had worked for the Department of Environmental Protection for 22 years, Amerikohl Minning for 5 years, and currently was employed with G.E.S. of Export, PA. Tom loved nature, and he enjoyed walking in the woods, kayaking, swimming, skiing, music, and reading. He coached soccer for the Monessen Recreation Soccer League and was assistant soccer coach for Geibel High School during the time his three sons attended there and played soccer there. Tom had previously sang with the Mon Valley Barbershop Quartet, and as a hobby, he enjoyed doing construction work and renovating houses. Tom enjoyed spending time with his family and his dog, Katie. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 34 years, Patricia Tunney Kovalchuk, three sons, Max Thomas Kovalchuk, Matthew Thomas Kovalchuk, and Thomas Patrick Kovalchuk, all of Pittsburgh; a sister Carol J. Kovalchuk of Sandpoint, IA; and by a brother, Kenneth E (Rebecca) Kovalchuk of Mt. Pleasant, PA. Friends will be received on Friday from 9:00 am to 10:30 am in the Dalfonso-Billick Funeral Home Inc. and Cremation Services, 441 Reed Avenue, Monessen. Services will be held on Friday at 10:30 am in the funeral home with Fr. Bob Lubic officiating.
