Robert J. Mandarino, Sr., 87, of Monessen, died Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at home. He was born in Monessen on April 16, 1925, the son of the late Frank S. Mandarino and Lena Ferraro Mandarino. Mr. Mandarino was a lifelong resident of Monessen and a 1943 graduate of Monessen High School. Following graduation, he joined the 3501st U.S. Army Air Force Base Unit as a Staff Sergeant in 1943 and received an Honorable Discharge in 1946. After returning from the service he went to work at the family business, Frank's Service Garage in Monessen. He was a member of Epiphany of Our Lord Roman Catholic Church and its Holy Name Society. Bob was active in many organizations, including the Knights of Columbus Council 954 and American Legion Post 28, and formerly with Monessen Lions Club, where he severed as King Lion, and the Monessen Elks 773. He was an avid, lifelong Greyhound fan and formed the Greyhound Movie Club.He is survived by his wife, Helen Hodgson Mandarino, four sons Robert Jr. (Laurie) Mandarino of Wexford, Gary (Liz) Mandarino of Denver, CO, John Mandarino of Bridgeville, and Bill Mandarino of Atlanta, GA, one granddaughter, Kristina, sister, Caroline Post of Monessen; a brother, Raymond (Dolores) Mandarino, of Las Vegas, NV; two sisters-in-law, Mary Mandarino of Monessen, and Veronica Mandarino, of California; a brother-in-law, Richard (Judy) Hodgson; and by numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph and Richard Mandarino; one sister, Elizabeth Karol and husband Leo, and by a brother-in-law, Francis Post. Friends will be received on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the DALFONSO-BILLICK FUNERAL HOME INC. and CREMATION SERVICES, 441 Reed Ave., Monessen. Services will be held on Friday, March 8, 2013, beginning with a 9:30 a.m. blessing in the funeral home, followed by a 10 a.m. Funeral Mass in Epiphany of Our Lord Church. Interment will follow in Grandview Cemetery, Monessen. The family suggests memorials be made to Epiphany Church or Mon Valley EMS through the funeral home. The following services will be held on Thursday: American Legion Post 1190 at 7:00 pm, and the Knights of Columbus #954 at 8:00 pm. Condolences accepted for the family at www.dalfonso-billick.com
