Raymond J. Jozwiak, 88, of Monessen, died Sunday, February 28, 2010 in Monongahela Valley Hospital Inc. following an illness of five weeks.He was born in Donora on August 11, 1921, the son of the late Casimir and Helen (Nowicki) Jozwiak. Ray was a 1939 graduate of Donora High School, and has been a resident of Monessen since marrying his beloved wife, Dorothy Lenio Jozwiak, 58 years ago. He was a faithful member of Epiphany of Our Lord R. C. Church and its Holy Name Society. Ray was a 54 year member of the Knights of Columbus Council 954 and American Legion Post 28. He belonged to the Greater Monessen Heritage Historical Society, and was a benefactor of the St. Vincent de Paul Society Store, and a contributor to the Monessen Public Library and District Center. He was proud of his American Polish heritage and a member of the Polish National Alliance. He was a retired millwright, having worked at U.S. Steel's Irvin Works. Ray was a veteran of WWII, having served with the U.S. Army Air Corps. He enlisted in January 1940 and served with the 40th Bombardment Group, where he earned the Asiatic Pacific Campaign and Air Medals. Ray loved nature and being out doors with his pet dogs. His hobbies included wood crafts, gardening, and helping others. Ray was quick witted and will be remembered by his family and friends for his sense of humor. His collection of clowns reminded him that "a good laugh is sunshine in the house."In addition to his wife, he is survived by a sister, Camille Pokol and husband Frank Sr. of Donora, a sister-in-law, Charlotte Jozwiak of Forest Hills, and a brother-in-law, Clinton Hammond of Mechanicsburg. He is also survived by his loving nephews; Clinton P. Hammond, Frank Pokol Jr., Andrew Lenio Jr., Joseph Tillman Jr., Richard Lenio, Ronald Godla, and by his dear nieces; Terri Schwartz, Kim Evans, Kathy Cox, Carin Alvarez, Kathleen Steffey, Dolores Yonek, Patricia Godla, Evelyn Campbell, Tillie Stimmel, and by his 35 great nieces and nephews and his 45 great-great nieces and nephews, all of which brought him great joy.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister Florence Hammond, and a brother Edwin Jozwiak.Friends will be received on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9, in the Dalfonso-Billick Funeral Home Inc. and Cremation Services, 441 Reed Avenue Monessen, (724-684-8750).Services will be held on Wednesday, March 3, 2010, beginning with a 11:00 am Blessing in the funeral home, followed by a 11:30 am Funeral Mass in Epiphany of Our Lord R. C. Church. Interment will follow in St. Hyacinth's Cemetery, Monessen. The Knights of Columbus #954 and the Catholic B.P.W. will conduct a prayer service on Tuesday at 8:00 pm in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial contributions be made to the St. Vincent DePaul Society Store, or the Epiphany of Our Lord Church.
