Pietro Vaccaro, 90, of Monessen, died peacefully in his home with his family at his side, on Sunday, October 31, 2010.He was born in Nocera Terenese, Italy on May 27, 1920, the son of the late Nicola and Angela (Macchino) Vaccaro. Mr. Vaccaro grew up in Italy and served with the Italian Army for six years during World War II, having been a prisoner of war for four of those years. He and his wife moved to the United States in December of 1949. He was a member of Epiphany of Our Lord Roman Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 954, and the Italian Society of Mutual Aid, all of Monessen. He retired from the Monessen Plant of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel, having worked as head diesel mechanic. Mr. Vaccaro was a kind and humble man who loved to be around people, and always greeted everyone with a smile. He enjoy spending time with his family, and was a loving husband, father and grandfather. His hobbies included gardening and making wine. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Serafina (Catherine) Maione Vaccaro, two sons and daughters-in-law; Dominick and Shirley Vaccaro of Monessen, Peter and Becky Vaccaro of Speers, a daughter and son-in-law; Gina and Mark Panicucci of Monessen, a daughter-in-law; Carlene Vaccaro of Monessen, nine grandchildren; Peter D., Tony, and Matt Vaccaro, Nicholas and Brittany Vaccaro, Sarah and Olivia Panicucci, and Chris and Nicole Vaccaro, a sister; Rosaria Manfredi of Italy, and by numerous nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons; Nicholas and Christopher Vaccaro, a brother Domenico Vaccaro, and a sister Marietta Berardelli.Friends will be received on Monday from 7 to 9 pm and on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm in the Dalfonso-Billick Funeral Home Inc. and Cremation Services, 441 Reed Avenue Monessen, (724-684-8750). Services will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 3rd, beginning with a 9:30 am Blessing in the funeral home, followed by a 10:00 am Funeral Mass in Epiphany of Our Lord R. C. Church. Interment will follow in Grandview Cemetery, Monessen.The Knights of Columbus Council 954 will conduct a prayer service on Tuesday at 7:00 pm in the funeral home.
