Nick M. Mappas, 78, of Monessen, died Thursday October 29, 2020 in Monongahela Valley Hospital Inc. He was born on December 18, 1941 in N. Charleroi, the son of the late Michael and Ethel (Paneris) Mappas. Nick was a 1960 graduate of Donora High School and received his bachelors degree from Salem University in West Virginia. He was a retired research chemist, having worked for Dacar, Bayer Chemical Company, and PPG Industries, where Nick helped to formulate and invent the Nerf Ball and expandable insulating foam. He was an active member of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church, the Monessen Elks Lodge 773, and a former member of the Ravens AA. Nick was an avid fan of numerous Mon Valley sports teams especially the Monessen Greyhound teams. He also was a supporter of the Monessen Public Library, and a member of Friends of the Monessen Public Library. Nick was a special guy, a person who everyone could count on. He was a kind, giving, patient, and caring gentleman who was a friend to all. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Kathleen Swade Mappas, a brother John Mappas, and a sister, Catherine Mappas, both of Florida, numerous nieces and nephews, and by his extended Swade family who considered Nick a brother. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his maternal grand parents, Nick and Katina Paneris. Friends will be received in Dalfonso-Billick Funeral Home Inc. and Cremation Services, 441 Reed Avenue, Monessen, on Sunday from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm, and on Monday from 11:00 am until 12:00 pm in St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church, 119 St. Spyridon Lane Monessen. Funeral Services will begin at 12:00 pm with Fr. Meletios Gianniodis officiating. Interment will follow in Holy Name Cemetery, Monessen. Everyone attending the viewing and funeral services are required to wear a face mask and practice social distancing. The number of people allowed in the funeral home will be limited.
