Michael Peckyno

Michael Peckyno, 79, of Monessen, died Wednesday, March 12, 2008 in the Residence at Hilltop.He was born in Monessen on January 3, 1929, the son of the late Frank and Sophia Drahobecky Peckyno. Mr. Peckyno was a life long resident of Monessen and a 1947 graduate of Monessen High School. He received his bachelor's degree in Education from the University of California, and attended Duquesne University. He was a member of Epiphany of Our Lord R. C. Church, the Belle Vernon American Legion Post 659, and a former member of the Pacific Palisades, CA American Legion Post 283. He was a Life Member and past Exulted Ruler of the Monessen Elks 773, and had served as District Deputy Grand Exulted Ruler for the Southwestern District of Pennsylvania. Mr. Peckyno was involved with the Boy Scouts of America in Monessen for many years, having seen all four of his sons attain the rank of Eagle Scout. He retired from the purchasing department as Assistant Superintendent of Maintenance for Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp., having worked at both the Allenport and Monessen Plants. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served with the U.S. Army Transport Corp in the 724th Railway Operations Battalion in Korea.He is survived by four sons, Thomas Peckyno of Monessen, Richard Peckyno and wife Hilde of Freehold, NJ, Kenneth Peckyno of Monessen, Robert Peckyno and wife Laura of Corvallis, OR, a daughter, Cynthia Palamara of Moon Twp., four brothers, George Peckyno of Marion, OH, Peter Peckyno and wife Ann of Monessen, John Peckyno and wife Syl of Hagerstown, MD, Steve Peckyno and wife Evelyn of Bethel Park, a sister, Helen Peresolak of Belle Vernon, six grandchildren, Christopher, Nicholas, Ken, and Alexandra Peckyno, James and Michael Palamara, and by numerous nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Jean Kissler Peckyno, two brothers Frank and Charles Peckyno, and by a sister Mary Fedarko.Friends will be received on Thursday from 6 to 8 pm and on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm in the Dalfonso-Billick Funeral Home Inc. 441 Reed Avenue Monessen, (724-684-8750).Services will be held on Saturday March 15, 2008, beginning with 12 Noon Blessing in the funeral home, followed by a 12:30 pm Funeral Mass in Epiphany of Our Lord R. C. Church. Interment will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Monongahela.
