John Joseph Penich, 85, of Monessen, died Monday, July 12, 2010 in U.P.M.C. Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was born in Monessen on June 7, 1925, the son of the late George and Mary Penich. John was a life long resident of Monessen, and a member of Epiphany of Our Lord Roman Catholic Church. He was a 1943 graduate of Monessen High School and a 1950 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, where he majored in business and was a member of the Alpha Kappa Si fraternity. During WWII, he served in the U.S. Navy as a signalman on the aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Franklin. Mr. Penich and his wife operated the Tip Top Tavern in Monessen for sixteen years. John retired as a supervisor with the Westmoreland County Probation Office, where he was employed for 32 years.Mr. Penich was a member of the Croatian Club, Eagles Aerie 2399, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1190, American Legion Post 28, and the Croatian Fraternal Union (C.F.U. 194). May he rest in peace. Slava joj vjecna.He is survived by wife, Nancy (Muzar) Penich, whom he married on August 26, 1950, two daughters and sons-in-law, Arlene Penich Karg and husband Ken, Susan Penich Lane and husband Brian, three grandchildren, Sarah Karg, Edward Lane, and Chelsea Lane.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a younger sister Susan Penich.Friends will be received on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm in the Dalfonso-Billick Funeral Home Inc. and Cremation Services, 441 Reed Avenue Monessen, (724-684-8750).Services will be held on Friday, July 16, 2010, beginning with a 9:30 am Blessing in the funeral home, followed by a 10:00 am Funeral Mass in Epiphany of Our Lord Roman Catholic Church.
