John S. Catanzaro, 91, of Monessen, died Tuesday, November 30, 2010 in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh.He was born in Monessen on October 11, 1919, the son of the late Samuel and Josephine (Savarino) Catanzaro. John was a life long resident of Monessen, and a 1937 graduate of Monessen High School. He was a member of Epiphany of Our Lord Roman Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 954, Sons of Italy, and Italian Society of Mutual Aid. He retired from the Monessen Plant of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp., having worked as a foreman in the combustion department. He was a veteran of WW II, serving for four years with the U.S. Army in the Philippines with Company E, 42nd Engineering Regiment.He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Veronica (Kolvek) Catanzaro, four daughters, Monica Mayerchak and husband Charles of Fallowfield Twp., JoMarie Mayernik and husband Steve of Fayetteville, NC, Debra Catanzaro of Fallowfield Twp., Dr. Renee Catanzaro and husband Mario Sciulli of Pittsburgh, twelve grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and by numerous nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by by an infant son, John Francis, and two sisters, Theresa Kite and Verena Catanzaro.Friends will be received on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm in the Dalfonso-Billick Funeral Home Inc. and Cremation Services, 441 Reed Avenue Monessen, (724-684-8750).Services will be held on Friday, December 3, 2010, beginning with a 9:30 am Blessing in the funeral home, followed by a 10:00 am Funeral Mass in Epiphany of Our Lord R. C. Church. Interment will follow in Grandview Cemetery, Monessen. The Knights of Columbus Council 954 will conduct a prayer service on Thursday at 6:00 pm in the funeral home.
