Gus August

Gus August, 92, of Monessen, passed away on Monday January 24, 2022 in Hallsworth House, Monessen. He was born on September 30, 1929 in Monessen, the son of the late James and Eftihia (Varles) August. Gus was a life long resident of Monessen, a graduate of Monessen High School Class of 1947, and a member of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church. He served his country during the Korean War with the U.S. Army with the 4th Infantry Medical Company. Gus was a member of the American Legion Post 28 and VFW Post 1190, both in Monessen. He retired from Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corporation's Monessen Plant, and then went on to work at Webster Metals. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years Mafalda "Muffy" (Mancini) August. Surviving are his son, James (Pam) August of Du Bois; two daughters, Anna Marie August of Morgantown, WV, Leanne August of Monessen; a sister, Anna Chicolis of Monessen; and by numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received on Thursday from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm in Dalfonso-Billick Funeral Home Inc. and Cremation Services, 441 Reed Avenue, Monessen. Additional viewing will be held on Friday morning at St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church, 119 St. Spyridon Lane Monessen, from 9:00 am to 10:00 am, time of the Funeral Service with Fr. Meletios Gianniodis officiating. Interment will follow in Grandview Cemetery, Monessen. The family kindly requests everyone attending the viewing and funeral service to wear a mask.
