Dorothy Lenio Jozwiak, 91, of Monessen, died Wednesday, January 13, 2016 in her residence.
She was born in Monessen on November 21, 1924, the daughter of the late John R. Lenio Sr. and Apolonia Szuba Lenio. Dorothy resided in Monessen all her life, and was a member of the Epiphany of Our Lord Catholic Church where she served as an Extra Ordinary Minister of the Eucharist, lector, and sacristan assistant of the Epiphany Chapel. She graduated from Monessen High School Class of 1942, and was a magna cum laude graduate of California University in 1945.
For 48 years she taught mathematics to students at Donora Jr. High School and the Ringgold School District Middle School. During that time she was a supervisor of student teachers for California University, Ringgold Math Department Chairmen, and a teacher mentor.
Dorothy also served as treasurer for the Ringgold School Employees F.C.U. for 65 years.
Dorothy was a charter member of the Monessen Chapter of the Catholic Business & Professional Women's Association; Lay spiritual advisor of the Epiphany Ladies; member and officer of the Greensburg Diocesan Council of Catholic Women and the Catholic Women's College Club of the Mon Valley; the Cal Gals of California University; Monessen Retired Teachers group; Friends of the Monessen Public Library; and the Greater Monessen Heritage Museum.
She received the Assumption Award from Bishop William G. Connare of the Greensburg Diocese for her diocesan service; served as a NCCW Philadelphia province director; was an St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Shrine Associate; was Bishops Advisor on the National Council as regional representative; received the Pope John Paul II Medal for outstanding service to her parish; in 2012 was inducted into the Order of St. Gregory the Great.
She and her late husband, Raymond, promoted seminarian education and the work of St. Vincent de Paul Society in the Monessen area, helping to establish the society's store in Monessen.
"Aunt Dorothy" will be remembered as a loving Aunt, a thoughtful and giving lady, and according to the meaning of her name, Dorothy, "A gift of God", whose memory we cherish and whose soul will always be in our prayers
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband of 58 years, Raymond J. Jozwiak, two sisters Julia Sowko and Anna Tillman, and by four brothers, Andrew, Joseph, John, and Edward Lenio.
Dorothy was the last surviving member of her immediate family, and is survived by her loving nieces and nephews; Dolores Yonek, Kathleen Steffey, Patricia (Ron) Godla, Tillie Stimmel, Andrew Lenio Jr., Joseph Tillman Jr., Terrie Schwartz, Kim Evans, Cathy Cox, Frank Pokol Jr., Carin Alvarez, Richard Pokol Sr., and by numerous great nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received on Friday from 1:00 to 4:00pm and from 6:00 to 8:00 pm in the Dalfonso-Billick Funeral Home Inc. and Cremation Services, 441 Reed Avenue Monessen (724-684-8750). Services will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2016, beginning with a 9:30 am Blessing in the funeral home, followed by a 10:00 am Funeral Mass in Epiphany of Our Lord Church. Interment will follow in St. Hyacinth's Cemetery, Monessen
