Donald J. "Half Pint" Hayes, 83, of Monessen, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on Wednesday, October 25, 2017 in Monongahela Valley Hospital Inc. He was born on March 28, 1934 in New Castle, PA, the son of the late Edward and Mary Eleanor (Grimes) Hayes. Don grew up in Monessen and was a member of the "First Street Ramblers". He graduated from Monessen High School in 1952 and served his country as a member of the U.S. Army in Germany following the Korean War. Don worked for American Chain and Cable, Page Division and later for Prudential Insurance Company in sales and training, retiring in 1997. He was proud of his Irish heritage and celebrated it whenever given the opportunity. Don was an avid sports critic and always enjoyed telling a joke or two. He was member of Epiphany of Our Lord Church, Knights of Columbus Council 954, Monessen Lions Club, having served as president, member of the board and as District 14-E zone chairman. He was also a member of the former St. Leonard's Church where he served on parish council. Don was instrumental in fundraising for the Monessen Public Library and the Monessen City Park Restoration Committee. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Gloria (Safo) Hayes; his son, Robert "RJ" (Amy) Hayes of Portland, OR; his daughter, Laura (James) McManus of Lynchburg, VA; and by his sister-in-laws, nieces and nephews who have been very supportive during his illness. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Edward, James, and Clarence Hayes, and his sister M. Rita Lee. Friends will be received on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm in the Dalfonso-Billick Funeral Home Inc. and Cremation Services, 441 Reed Avenue, Monessen. Services will be held on Monday beginning with a 9:30 am Blessing in the funeral home, followed by a 10:00 am Funeral Mass in Epiphany Church, 44 Pennsylvania Blvd. Monessen, with Rev. Michael J. Crookston officiating. Entombment will follow in the Grandview Cemetery Mausoleum, Monessen. The following services will be held on Sunday in the funeral home: Monessen Lions Club 3:00 pm, Knights of Columbus and C.D. of A. at 7:00 pm.
