Charles Walter Shughart

July 27, 1953 — May 1, 2023

Charles W.  Shughart  (Chuck) passed away on May 1, 2023 after a battle with Parkinsonism/Lewey Body Dementia.  Fittingly, May 1 is known internationally as Labor Day.   Chuck spent much of his working life as a union organizer and business agent for Local 776 of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, and after his retirement from the union, held a position as a labor mediator for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Labor and Industry.  He retired from his position as the Regional Director of the Harrisburg region after his diagnosis with Parkinsonism in 2018. Chuck graduated from Big Spring Highschool in 1971, lied about his age to join the Marines, and spent the years from 1971 to 1975 at Camp LeJeune. Chuck loved helping his friends, neighbors and family, particularly if it involved using any of his huge collection of tools and machinery, especially his John Deere backhoe.  He loved his backhoe almost as much as he loved his wife of 27 years.  He also loved his pets, Boris, the good dog, Fanny, his cat,  who he and Boris rescued from the middle of the road on a cold January night, and Hugo, the bad dog. Chuck spent much of his free time growing corn in his vegetable garden and working on his rental properties in Carlisle and Newville, and on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.  He took great pride in being able to solve problems relating to the maintenance and upkeep of his properties.  For a challenge, he undertook to be the general contractor for his house in Carlisle and did the majority of the plumbing and electrical work, with help from friends and family.  He as insistent that all the electrical and plumbing work be pleasing to the eye. Chuck is survived by his wife of 27 years, Yvette M. Kostelac, his brother, John Shughart and his wife, Barbara, his brother-in-law Donn Reid, his nephews John Shughart and Donn A. Reid and his wife Lisa, and his nieces Susan Keiter and her husband, Mark, Stacy Rosenberry and her partner Jeffrey Kuhn , and Leslie Shughart and her wife Cheryl Diggs.  He is preceded in death by his parents John Paul and Maybelle Shughart, his sister, Linda Reid, and his brother Larry Shughart. All services are private and arrangements are entrusted to the Dalfonso-Billick Funeral Home Inc., 441 Reed Ave Monessen PA 15062. Contributions in Chuck’s memory may be made to the Humane Society of Harrisburg or to Furry Friends Network, Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
