Charles E. Piper, 88, of Monessen, died Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at his home. He was born in Wheeler, PA on Sept. 13, 1925, the eldest son of the late Russel and Mary Catherine Brodigan Piper. He attended Monessen schools until his enlistment in the U.S. Navy in 1942. After serving his country during WW II, he went on to work for the Monessen Southwestern Railroad as a brakeman in 1948, having retired a conductor in 1983. He was a member of V.F.W. Post 1190, American Legion Post 28, Eagles Aerie 2399, Ukrainian Club, and Monessen Firemen's Clubs 1 & 2 for over 60 years. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, James W. and Anna Kirkpatrick Jr. of White, four grandchildren, Heather, Katie, Dalton Charles, and Megan Kirkpatrick, two great grandchildren, Nicholas and Esme, a brother Joseph T. (Cora) Piper of Las Vegas, NV, two nieces, Deborah Piorkowski of McKinney, TX and Mary Beth (Chris) Paglia of Monessen, three nephews, James, John, and Charles Piper, and a great nephew, Roman Gabriel Paglia. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Dolores (Yoursco) Piper, three brothers, James W., John A. "Jocko", and Russel W. Piper, and by a sister Mary Elizabeth. As per Mr. Piper's wishes, there will be no public viewing. Friends are invited to attend a graveside service with Military Honors on Monday Dec. 23, 2013 at 12:30 pm in St. Mary Cemetery, Rostraver Twp., with Rev. Conrad Auel officiating. Mr. Piper requested memorial contributions be made to the Salvation Army, 308 Schoonmaker Ave. Monessen, PA 15062.
