Alvina Joanna (Malena) Mauro, 90, of Rostraver Twp., passed away on Monday, October 26, 2009 in Monongahela Valley Hospital Inc..She was born in Monongahela on November 11, 1918, (the original Armistice Day), the daughter of the late Vincenzo and Angelina Figoli Malena. Alvina was a member of Epiphany of Our Lord R. C. Church in Monessen. She was also a member of the Epiphany Ladies, the Italian-American Heritage Society, and the former Italian Society of Mutual Aid. Alvina enjoyed being a volunteer Pierogi maker for the Epiphany Church, and was involved in teaching line dancing for a number of years at the Monessen Senior Center. Alvina was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and a friend to all.In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Anthony "Tony" Mauro in 1992, four brothers; George Sr., Joseph, Albert and Vincent Malena Jr., five sisters; Christine DiCenzo, Theresa Pansino, Rose Opalinski, Antoinette Martino and Angel Marie Malena, who died in infancy, and by a son-in-law, John "Yunny" Apessos.Alvina is survived by daughters, Vincetta "Dolly" Apessos and Loretta Ferguson and husband Alex Ferguson, all of Carroll Twp., sons Joseph "Buddy" Mauro and wife Roberta of Grenada Hills, CA, and Lawrence Mauro and wife Genevieve of Donora, her grandchildren; Cynthia Apessos Cooke and John Apessos; Lorraine Mauro Faley, Maria Mauro Acosta and Joseph Mauro II, Anthony Mauro, Lisa Mauro Peccon and Lawrence Mauro, Alexander Ferguson III, Ann Marie Ferguson Bianchi and Krista Ferguson, her great grandchildren; Jo Cooke Barber, Stephanie Cooke, Tom and Amy Faley, Kaitlan and Alyssa Mauro, Anthony and Angelo Mauro, Alexander IV and Lily Ferguson, Maria, Gina, Christopher, and Nicholas Peccon, Cole, Alina, and Olivia Bianchi, Giulia and Clara Mauro, and by numerous nieces and nephews.Friends will be received on Wednesday from 7 to 9 pm, and on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm in the Dalfonso-Billick Funeral Home Inc. and Cremation Services, 441 Reed Avenue Monessen, (724-684-8750).Services will be held on Friday Oct. 30, 2009, beginning with a 9:30 am Blessing in the funeral home, followed by a 10:00 am Funeral Mass in Epiphany of Our Lord R. C. Church. Interment will follow in Mon. Valley Memorial Park, Donora. The Epiphany Ladies and the Knights of Columbus Council # 954 will conduct a prayer services on Thursday at 8:00 pm in the funeral home.
